From the immediate proximity a leonine thundering was heard, which made the limbs of all living beings stiffen into deadly stone: however the hearing apparatus of the ants had not the capacity to receive this monster of sound; it passed it by, and so it was only with a dark, mysterious sense of anxiety, suddenly stirring within the interior of their souls, that they perceived that paralysing event. Slowly, timidly, cautiously, comic little stars appeared in the sky, being extinguished, going out every moment, – like thoughts in the head of a person idling, dreaming and dying, – small, great little stars – thoughts in the hollow skull of the divine beast, will-o'-the-wisps in the marshland of the universe, innumerable, crazy little eyes, peeping out of the madhouse of the world.
